Enjoy fall fun in New England by train

Our top picks for celebrating Halloween and fall fun in the region along Commuter Rail!

There are tons of spots to enjoy the season across the Commuter Rail network. Here are some of our favorites. Don’t forget, kids 11 and under always ride free and $10 weekends are the best travel deal in town!

1. Salem & Haunted Happenings

In the month of October, Salem Haunted Happenings take over the city with events, historic attractions, and festive shops. During the last two weekends of the month, Commuter Rail offers additional service to/from Salem. Schedules will be posted to MBTA.com. The station is right in Salem, so just hop off and start exploring!

2. Events at Wachusett Mountain

Before ski season is in full swing, Wachusett Mountain hosts their Apple Festival and Fall Food Truck Festival. The Mountain is just a short rideshare (10+ mins) from Wachusett station.

  • Apple Festival: October 16-17
  • Fall Food Truck Festival: November 6

3. Mill No. 5 in Lowell, MA

Mill No.5 is an indoor streetscape of salvaged storefronts with coffee, a movie theater, farmer’s market, independent shopping, and events. And they’re ready for Halloween! Enjoy a scary movie at the Luna Theater, shop their holiday themed marketplace, or pick up a sweet treat.

4. Waterfire in Providence, RI

WaterFire centers around a series of nearly 100 bonfires that blaze just above the surface of the three rivers that pass through the middle of downtown Providence. Events are free and are held on Saturdays (The next two are October 16 and November 6).

5. Foliage views across Commuter Rail

Sometimes it isn’t about the destination, but the journey. Plenty of our routes along Commuter Rail have beautiful views of foliage just outside your window. Take a trip and never leave your seat. Or maybe hop off for a cup of coffee before your return trip.

Some of the best views according to our staff are along the Fitchburg line.

6. Farmers markets, pumpkin & apple picking

We put together a map of farmers markets, farms, and apple/pumpkin picking spots near Commuter Rail. Don’t let not having a car stop you from missing out on fall fun in the region.
