This exhibit features over 80 artworks in a variety of media including drawing\, painting\, sculpture\, weaving\, embroidery\, quilting\, collage\, mixed media and more.\nThis exhibit is on view in the first-floor Sargent Gallery and second-floor Hartson Gallery. \nFOLIA is a collaborative exhibition featuring works by Amesbury artists Amy Vander Els & Heather Karp. This exhibit explores the quiet beauty and joyful rhythm of leaves and the symbolic meaning behind many that speaks of perseverance\, resilience and hope. Thirty-six artworks are displayed amongst spring greenery in the first-floor Hills Gallery. Amy and Heather will give a free artist talk on Thursday\, May 21st from 6:00-7:00pm\, concluding with Q&A. \nThe 11th Annual Outdoor Sculpture Garden Exhibition debuted on May 1st\, and will remain on view year-round until April 2027. At nearly 3\,000 square feet\, the Range Lights Sculpture Garden resides behind the historic NAA and is seen and visited by hundreds of people every week. This year’s exhibition features 16 pieces by 10 local and regional artists. DESCRIPTION:Hammond Castle Museum welcomes guests to tour the many rooms of the home and laboratory of John Hays Hammond Jr.\, renowned as one of the most prolific American inventors of the 20th century and famously known as the Father of Radio Control. \nThroughout the 2026 season guests can also enjoy a completely updated Invention Room\, showcasing exciting new perspectives on Hammond’s work as a scientist\, inventor and engineer\, as well as a brand-new set of rotating exhibits\, including “Inside the Faraday Cage: The Science of Things that Aren’t So” in the spring and summer and “Brave Too Much: The Legend of John Coffee Hays” in the fall and winter. We offer two options for daily admission: Guided and Self-Guided tours. \nGuided Tours:\nLed by a member of Hammond Castle Museum’s talented tours staff\, Guided Tours of the Museum last approximately 35-40 minutes and cover basic information about the history of the building and its inhabitants. Photo by Lucy Cleveland. \nIn 2026\, as part of the Salem 400+ initiative\, PEM will present “Salem as Muse\,” a series of talks that highlight works represented in PEM’s collection. These programs will explore a diverse range of subjects that connect to the unique history and character of Salem\, Massachusetts. \nCurator-at-Large Paula Richter will give a presentation centered on Lucy Cleveland: textile artist\, children’s book author\, 19th-century reformer and abolitionist. Born in Salem in 1780\, Cleveland traveled to China and Indonesia with her husband\, a sea captain\, and published more than a dozen books. One of her artworks is on display in Salem Stories. \nAbout our presenter \nPaula Richter\nSince 2009\, Paula Richter has been responsible for curatorial research and support of the museum’s changing exhibition program\, related publications and core activities within the curatorial department. She has participated on exhibition teams for more than a dozen recent and upcoming exhibitions and numerous gallery installations and rotations\, including The Salem Witch Trials 1692. She previously worked for the Cape Ann Historical Association\, the Sargent House Museum and Landmark College. A graduate of the University of New Hampshire\, Richter writes and lectures on American textiles and fashion and New England art and decorative arts. She also leads PEM’s partnership with Handwork 2026\, presented by Craft in America.

DESCRIPTION:Coffee Cupping is like a wine tasting\, but for coffee. Led by longtime coffee enthusiast Rob “Fitz” Fitzgibbon\, this interactive program invites participants to slow down and really pay attention to a drink most of us take for granted. \nThe experience begins with a presentation covering coffee’s journey from farm to cup\, how it’s grown and processed\, how people have consumed it throughout history\, and how to think about roasting\, aroma\, flavor\, and mouthfeel. Then\, participants dive into a hands-on tasting\, sampling three different coffees and recording what they smell and taste using stickers and a flavor wheel. No prior coffee knowledge required\, just curiosity. \nThe program finishes up with a group discussion comparing perceptions of taste and aroma\, a Q&A session\, and time to finish the coffee together. Coffees are selected specifically for each event and revealed at the end\, often including a local roaster’s blend as a fun hometown wildcard. \nGain a deeper appreciation for the complexity\, craft\, and quiet wonder of coffee\, and maybe never drink it the same way again!

SUMMARY:Newburyport Art presents May Exhibitions at 65 Water Street
DESCRIPTION:Newburyport Art (NAA) presents three new shows opening in the month of May! \nSoft Structures is a group exhibition that explores fibers and fibrous material as process and metaphor. This exhibit features over 80 artworks in a variety of media including drawing\, painting\, sculpture\, weaving\, embroidery\, quilting\, collage\, mixed media and more.\nThis exhibit is on view in the first-floor Sargent Gallery and second-floor Hartson Gallery. \nFOLIA is a collaborative exhibition featuring works by Amesbury artists Amy Vander Els & Heather Karp. This exhibit explores the quiet beauty and joyful rhythm of leaves and the symbolic meaning behind many that speaks of perseverance\, resilience and hope. Thirty-six artworks are displayed amongst spring greenery in the first-floor Hills Gallery. Amy and Heather will give a free artist talk on Thursday\, May 21st from 6:00-7:00pm\, concluding with Q&A. \nThe 11th Annual Outdoor Sculpture Garden Exhibition debuted on May 1st\, and will remain on view year-round until April 2027. At nearly 3\,000 square feet\, the Range Lights Sculpture Garden resides behind the historic NAA and is seen and visited by hundreds of people every week. This year’s exhibition features 16 pieces by 10 local and regional artists. The participating artists include; Jeffrey Briggs\, Lindley Briggs\, Sarah Burns and Mike Platt\, Alexis Guieb-Alimbuyuguen\, Andrew Henschel\, Mae Kenny\, Evan Ralph\, Michael Updike and Raynor Warner. \nA reception for FOLIA and Soft Structures will be held on Saturday\, May 2nd from 4-6pm\, with the 11th Annual Sculpture Exhibit reception beginning at 3:00pm\, including a Best in Show award at 3:30pm. The receptions are free and open to the public\, and visitors participating in the May 2nd Newburyport Artwalk are encouraged to stop by. \nNew Hours: Wednesday through Sunday from 11:00am–5:00pm. The gallery is handicap accessible. SUMMARY:Ropes Mansion Self-Guided Tour
DESCRIPTION:Built in 1727 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places\, Ropes Mansion is recognized as one of New England’s most significant historic structures. Fans of the 1993 movie Hocus Pocus will also recognize it as “Allison’s house” – though the inside of the home did not appear in the film. Instead\, its decorations and furnishings reflect a renovation by sisters Sarah\, Mary and Eliza Ropes in the 1890s. Visitors can explore the mansion at their own pace with PEM Guides on hand to answer questions. \nVisits inside the mansion are $15 per person\, or $5 with the purchase of museum admission. Tickets can be purchased in advance online or at the Admissions desk inside the museum (161 Essex Street). Timed entries are at 15 and 45 minutes past the hour\, with only a limited number of people allowed in the house at a time. Visitors are requested to arrive 10 minutes before their entry time. The last entry of the day is at 3:15 pm. \nThe Ropes Mansion Garden is open to the public every day from dawn to dusk and is free to visit. SUMMARY:Yin Yu Tang: A Chinese Home Tour
DESCRIPTION:Step inside a 200-year-old Chinese home in Salem to experience Chinese art\, architecture and culture. \nFor 200 years\, Yin Yu Tang stood in the rural village of Huang Cun in a mountainous region of southeastern China. Home to eight generations of the Huang family\, this house was dismantled\, transported and re-erected at the Peabody Essex Museum in 2003 through a partnership between PEM and the governmental authorities of Huizhou\, in Anhui Province. Yin Yu Tang’s journey constitutes a landmark collaboration between Chinese and American architects\, artisans\, conservators\, engineers and museum experts. The home is presented as it was when the family last lived there in 1982. \nPlan Your Visit\nExercise care\nPlease help us preserve the house for future generations by refraining from touching objects and the structure itself. Non-flash photography and videography is permitted for personal use only. Tripods and selfie sticks are not allowed. Please walk with care and watch out for uneven stonework and raised thresholds. \nStore your belongings\, but keep your coat\nYin Yu Tang is partially outdoors and may be cool in fall and winter. Strollers\, bags\, backpacks and umbrellas are not permitted in the house. Please leave them at the coatroom or the cubbies by the Information desk.
