DESCRIPTION:Discover the magic when individual objects\, no matter how similar or different\, are joined into an entirely new work at the Cove Gallery in Rocky Neck \nAugust 27\, 2026 – September 20\, 2026 Cove Gallery\nOpening reception: Thursday\, August 27 from 5 to 8pm \nGloucester\, MA — The act of assembly reveals\, to the artist\, new forms\, new relationships of color and shape. Perhaps another unit can be placed over here\, or a new piece added there\, giving a fresh and unexpected whole. These works by five Rocky Neck members explore assemblage\, in its broadest sense. Using materials ranging from wire\, corrugated cardboard\, reclaimed wood and hardware\, to toy figures\, rocks\, and recycled flameworked glass the pieces become\, in the hands of the contributing artists\, surprising and delightful 3-D works. \nThe artists in this show include: \nDavid Covert has been involved in art making for nearly fifty years. Basically self-taught\, by virtue of continuing to draw\, paint\, and occasionally sculpt since the late sixties. Much of his work has been in the two-dimensional arts\, dominated by drawing and painting and printmaking. His training has been mostly informal\, interspersed with individual classes at Boston area art schools including the Museum School of the MFA\, Mass College of Art\, and the late DeCordova Museum school. He settled in Beverly\, Massachusetts\, where he continues to work with ad agencies and individual clients. In between he still finds time to create original artwork made from scrap materials. Her assemblages incorporate objects collected during her travels. Her work begins with a found frame. She composes intuitively using an evolving collection of jewelry\, watch parts\, hardware\, book covers and other objects that she has collected over time. Some pieces have personal history\, while others are chosen for their beauty or character or the story they suggest. She transforms these elements into compositions I call “jewels”. What was once discarded or put aside becomes precious. She creates these works to encourage others to look for beauty in the ordinary and overlooked objects and to recognize the potential in everyday objects and to\, hopefully\, inspire curiosity\, reflection and a deeper appreciation for the unexpected. Marion earned her BFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design. DESCRIPTION:Newburyport Art (NAA) presents three new shows opening in the month of May! \nSoft Structures is a group exhibition that explores fibers and fibrous material as process and metaphor. This exhibit features over 80 artworks in a variety of media including drawing\, painting\, sculpture\, weaving\, embroidery\, quilting\, collage\, mixed media and more.\nThis exhibit is on view in the first-floor Sargent Gallery and second-floor Hartson Gallery. \nFOLIA is a collaborative exhibition featuring works by Amesbury artists Amy Vander Els & Heather Karp. This exhibit explores the quiet beauty and joyful rhythm of leaves and the symbolic meaning behind many that speaks of perseverance\, resilience and hope. Thirty-six artworks are displayed amongst spring greenery in the first-floor Hills Gallery. Amy and Heather will give a free artist talk on Thursday\, May 21st from 6:00-7:00pm\, concluding with Q&A. \nThe 11th Annual Outdoor Sculpture Garden Exhibition debuted on May 1st\, and will remain on view year-round until April 2027. At nearly 3\,000 square feet\, the Range Lights Sculpture Garden resides behind the historic NAA and is seen and visited by hundreds of people every week. This year’s exhibition features 16 pieces by 10 local and regional artists. DESCRIPTION:From stick figure doodlers to first-rate talents\, join us for a seaside\, En Plein Air sketch class with Sue Wheeler of Arts Abound in Magnolia. All skill levels are welcome! This two-hour session includes a 30-minute beginner sketch lesson. All you need to bring is a sketchbook\, pencils\, a ruler\, and an eraser. Please note: watercolors\, pastels\, oils\, or acrylics are not permitted on the Museum grounds. \nAttendees who wish to tour the Hammond Castle Museum after this class are entitled to a 20% discount on a self-guided tour. Museum Member savings apply.\nWeather-dependent; classes may be canceled\, and reservations will be refunded if necessary. \nAbout Sue Wheeler:\nSue has a lifetime of making art through various mediums from delectable pastries to abstracts in pastels\, watercolor\, and acrylics. She enjoys using her creative flair in quilting and interior design as well. \nSue graduated from the University of Denver with a Bachelor’s in business with a focus on hospitality management and earned an associate’s degree from the Culinary Institute of America. Following her tenure as a pastry chef in New Hampshire\, Sue returned to school for a certificate in graphic design and put her talents to use as a designer in the book publishing and art publishing industries in Vermont. In early 2019\, Sue opened her own gallery and studio\, Arts Abound in Magnolia Village\, MA\, as an artistic haven for local artists. Through the gallery\, over 30 artists featured their creative works\, ranging from paintings\, hand-painted silk scarves\, silver jewelry\, and more. Sue also ran many workshops and classes featuring many of the artists. Often\, Sue would work late into the night\, painting in her Arts Abound studio. After closing the gallery in 2022\, Sue continued to offer the often sold-out painting classes\, taught by some of the Arts Abound artists. \nSue has studied under numerous artists to learn watercolor\, acrylic painting\, cold wax & oil\, and collage. Her goals for the Hammond Castle Museum sketch classes are to engage those who are new to the world of art and reinvigorate those who haven’t picked up a blank canvas or sketch pad in a long time. Sue’s philosophy on the creative process encourages you to be less concerned about the final product and instead to enjoy the journey of creativity and get lost in the moment. Once you find yourself in your work\, you may just be surprised!

DESCRIPTION:The Newburyport ArtWalk is a FREE\, self-guided tour that enables art enthusiasts to easily discover and explore Newburyport’s many wonderful art galleries. This interactive art tour guides participants on an art adventure through Newburyport’s Historic District and also includes a few hidden gems just beyond downtown. In conjunction with the ArtWalk\, many local galleries showcase special exhibitions\, host engaging art discussions and live demonstrations of techniques. The 2026 ArtWalk will be held on Saturday\, Oct. 3rd from 10am-5pm. Participants are: Alan Bull Studio; Metzy’s Cantina; CHALK Gallery; Threadneedle Gallery; Valerie’s Gallery ; Greetings by Design; New England Sketch Book; Newburyport Art; Blochaus Art Gallery; The Galleryon Federal; Chococoa Baking Co.; The Blue Lobster Print Studio and Gallery. \nEstablished in 2002 by a group of independent art gallery owners\, the ArtWalk has showcased original fine art cherished locally and respected throughout the national and international artist communities. The Newburyport ArtWalk features a broad range of art types and styles ranging from painting\, printmaking and sculpture to artisan creations\, photography and ceramics. This exhibit explores the quiet beauty and joyful rhythm of leaves and the symbolic meaning behind many that speaks of perseverance\, resilience and hope. Thirty-six artworks are displayed amongst spring greenery in the first-floor Hills Gallery. SUMMARY:CAM Studio Art: Design and Print the Folly Cove Way
DESCRIPTION:Step into the spirit of the legendary Folly Cove Designers and learn the art of block printing with artist Mary Rhinelander in this four-week course. This class blends design fundamentals\, creative play\, and the rich history of Cape Ann’s iconic design collective. Referencing her unpublished book\, Design and How\, you’ll explore the principles of design that Virginia Lee Demetrios taught her students—selecting a theme and exploring it deeply through clarity of line\, rhythm\, repetition\, and pattern—and you will discover how her timeless ideas can elevate your own artistic voice. Each week builds your confidence as you sketch\, carve\, and print your way towards an original finished artwork. \nPlease note: This class has four sessions. \nMary Rhinelander is a professional artist with an MFA in printmaking. Gloucester is in her DNA\, starting with great-grandparents who spent summers on Eastern Point. She lives in East Gloucester\, in a yellow clapboard house once known as “The Summer Art House” where painter Theresa Bernstein and her painter/printmaker husband\, William Meyerowitz\, spent many decades (starting in 1924). Having purchased her home directly from their estate\, William’s etching press is still happily living in the sun-filled basement studio. Mary has had many solo and group shows and her work is in both public and private collections. She has painted murals\, designed logos and book covers\, illustrated for a variety of publications\, and taught students of all ages. In 2004 she founded Mermade Press\, a fine art card business. With a deep affinity for the Folly Cove Designers and Virginia Lee Demetrios in particular\, it has been Mary’s great pleasure to bring block printing workshops into Cape Ann’s public schools with the support of CAM and the Gloucester Education Foundation.

DESCRIPTION:From stick figure doodlers to first-rate talents\, join us for a seaside\, En Plein Air sketch class with Sue Wheeler of Arts Abound in Magnolia. All skill levels are welcome! This two-hour session includes a 30-minute beginner sketch lesson. All you need to bring is a sketchbook\, pencils\, a ruler\, and an eraser. Please note: watercolors\, pastels\, oils\, or acrylics are not permitted on the Museum grounds. \nAttendees who wish to tour the Hammond Castle Museum after this class are entitled to a 20% discount on a self-guided tour. Museum Member savings apply.\nWeather-dependent; classes may be canceled\, and reservations will be refunded if necessary. \nAbout Sue Wheeler:\nSue has a lifetime of making art through various mediums from delectable pastries to abstracts in pastels\, watercolor\, and acrylics. She enjoys using her creative flair in quilting and interior design as well. \nSue graduated from the University of Denver with a Bachelor’s in business with a focus on hospitality management and earned an associate’s degree from the Culinary Institute of America. Following her tenure as a pastry chef in New Hampshire\, Sue returned to school for a certificate in graphic design and put her talents to use as a designer in the book publishing and art publishing industries in Vermont. In early 2019\, Sue opened her own gallery and studio\, Arts Abound in Magnolia Village\, MA\, as an artistic haven for local artists. Through the gallery\, over 30 artists featured their creative works\, ranging from paintings\, hand-painted silk scarves\, silver jewelry\, and more. Sue also ran many workshops and classes featuring many of the artists. Often\, Sue would work late into the night\, painting in her Arts Abound studio. After closing the gallery in 2022\, Sue continued to offer the often sold-out painting classes\, taught by some of the Arts Abound artists. \nSue has studied under numerous artists to learn watercolor\, acrylic painting\, cold wax & oil\, and collage. Her goals for the Hammond Castle Museum sketch classes are to engage those who are new to the world of art and reinvigorate those who haven’t picked up a blank canvas or sketch pad in a long time. Sue’s philosophy on the creative process encourages you to be less concerned about the final product and instead to enjoy the journey of creativity and get lost in the moment. Once you find yourself in your work\, you may just be surprised!

DESCRIPTION:Newburyport Art (NAA) presents three new shows opening in the month of May! \nSoft Structures is a group exhibition that explores fibers and fibrous material as process and metaphor. This exhibit features over 80 artworks in a variety of media including drawing\, painting\, sculpture\, weaving\, embroidery\, quilting\, collage\, mixed media and more.\nThis exhibit is on view in the first-floor Sargent Gallery and second-floor Hartson Gallery. \nFOLIA is a collaborative exhibition featuring works by Amesbury artists Amy Vander Els & Heather Karp. This exhibit explores the quiet beauty and joyful rhythm of leaves and the symbolic meaning behind many that speaks of perseverance\, resilience and hope. Thirty-six artworks are displayed amongst spring greenery in the first-floor Hills Gallery. Amy and Heather will give a free artist talk on Thursday\, May 21st from 6:00-7:00pm\, concluding with Q&A. \nThe 11th Annual Outdoor Sculpture Garden Exhibition debuted on May 1st\, and will remain on view year-round until April 2027. At nearly 3\,000 square feet\, the Range Lights Sculpture Garden resides behind the historic NAA and is seen and visited by hundreds of people every week. This year’s exhibition features 16 pieces by 10 local and regional artists. The participating artists include; Jeffrey Briggs\, Lindley Briggs\, Sarah Burns and Mike Platt\, Alexis Guieb-Alimbuyuguen\, Andrew Henschel\, Mae Kenny\, Evan Ralph\, Michael Updike and Raynor Warner. \nA reception for FOLIA and Soft Structures will be held on Saturday\, May 2nd from 4-6pm\, with the 11th Annual Sculpture Exhibit reception beginning at 3:00pm\, including a Best in Show award at 3:30pm. The receptions are free and open to the public\, and visitors participating in the May 2nd Newburyport Artwalk are encouraged to stop by. \nNew Hours: Wednesday through Sunday from 11:00am–5:00pm.
