DESCRIPTION:Newburyport Art (NAA) invites artists\, members\, collectors\, friends\, and art lovers to gather for a celestial celebration of 25 years of creativity\, connection\, and community. This year’s Art Auction exhibition is on display from Wednesday\, September 2nd until Saturday\, October 3rd. A ticketed auction party will be held on Saturday\, October 3rd\, from 4-8pm.\nOver 160 artworks are available for online silent auction bidding now until October 3rd @6pm. In the downstairs Sargent Gallery\, the exhibit includes NAA Member Artwork featuring photography\, mixed media\, sculpture\, oil\, acrylic and more. Upstairs in the Hartson Gallery is the Collector’s Collection – showcasing artwork donated from private collections\, including work by notable artists such as Harold Feinstein\, Cara Weston\, and Carlos Mérida. Working with nationally renowned museums\, galleries\, and corporate collections keeps Sarah up-to-date on industry best practices and allows her a pipeline of resources for artwork and emerging artists.\nThe NAA provides a gathering place for artists interested in meeting with other artists working in particular mediums\, by providing Featured Interest Groups (FIGs). DESCRIPTION:Newburyport Art (NAA) presents three new shows opening in the month of May! \nSoft Structures is a group exhibition that explores fibers and fibrous material as process and metaphor. This exhibit features over 80 artworks in a variety of media including drawing\, painting\, sculpture\, weaving\, embroidery\, quilting\, collage\, mixed media and more.\nThis exhibit is on view in the first-floor Sargent Gallery and second-floor Hartson Gallery. \nFOLIA is a collaborative exhibition featuring works by Amesbury artists Amy Vander Els & Heather Karp. This exhibit explores the quiet beauty and joyful rhythm of leaves and the symbolic meaning behind many that speaks of perseverance\, resilience and hope. Thirty-six artworks are displayed amongst spring greenery in the first-floor Hills Gallery. Amy and Heather will give a free artist talk on Thursday\, May 21st from 6:00-7:00pm\, concluding with Q&A. \nThe 11th Annual Outdoor Sculpture Garden Exhibition debuted on May 1st\, and will remain on view year-round until April 2027. At nearly 3\,000 square feet\, the Range Lights Sculpture Garden resides behind the historic NAA and is seen and visited by hundreds of people every week. This year’s exhibition features 16 pieces by 10 local and regional artists. The participating artists include; Jeffrey Briggs\, Lindley Briggs\, Sarah Burns and Mike Platt\, Alexis Guieb-Alimbuyuguen\, Andrew Henschel\, Mae Kenny\, Evan Ralph\, Michael Updike and Raynor Warner. \nA reception for FOLIA and Soft Structures will be held on Saturday\, May 2nd from 4-6pm\, with the 11th Annual Sculpture Exhibit reception beginning at 3:00pm\, including a Best in Show award at 3:30pm. DESCRIPTION:Step into the spirit of the legendary Folly Cove Designers and learn the art of block printing with artist Mary Rhinelander in this four-week course. This class blends design fundamentals\, creative play\, and the rich history of Cape Ann’s iconic design collective. Referencing her unpublished book\, Design and How\, you’ll explore the principles of design that Virginia Lee Demetrios taught her students—selecting a theme and exploring it deeply through clarity of line\, rhythm\, repetition\, and pattern—and you will discover how her timeless ideas can elevate your own artistic voice. Each week builds your confidence as you sketch\, carve\, and print your way towards an original finished artwork. \nPlease note: This class has four sessions. \nMary Rhinelander is a professional artist with an MFA in printmaking. Gloucester is in her DNA\, starting with great-grandparents who spent summers on Eastern Point. She lives in East Gloucester\, in a yellow clapboard house once known as “The Summer Art House” where painter Theresa Bernstein and her painter/printmaker husband\, William Meyerowitz\, spent many decades (starting in 1924). Having purchased her home directly from their estate\, William’s etching press is still happily living in the sun-filled basement studio. Mary has had many solo and group shows and her work is in both public and private collections. She has painted murals\, designed logos and book covers\, illustrated for a variety of publications\, and taught students of all ages. In 2004 she founded Mermade Press\, a fine art card business. With a deep affinity for the Folly Cove Designers and Virginia Lee Demetrios in particular\, it has been Mary’s great pleasure to bring block printing workshops into Cape Ann’s public schools with the support of CAM and the Gloucester Education Foundation.

Encouraged by kindly Jack Scarecrow\, Spookley tries his best\, but he isn’t sure he has what it takes until a mighty storm threatens Holiday Hill Farm. Spookley realizes it is up to him and his square shape to save the day. DESCRIPTION:Newburyport Art (NAA) presents three new shows opening in the month of May! \nSoft Structures is a group exhibition that explores fibers and fibrous material as process and metaphor. This exhibit features over 80 artworks in a variety of media including drawing\, painting\, sculpture\, weaving\, embroidery\, quilting\, collage\, mixed media and more.\nThis exhibit is on view in the first-floor Sargent Gallery and second-floor Hartson Gallery. \nFOLIA is a collaborative exhibition featuring works by Amesbury artists Amy Vander Els & Heather Karp. This exhibit explores the quiet beauty and joyful rhythm of leaves and the symbolic meaning behind many that speaks of perseverance\, resilience and hope. Thirty-six artworks are displayed amongst spring greenery in the first-floor Hills Gallery. Amy and Heather will give a free artist talk on Thursday\, May 21st from 6:00-7:00pm\, concluding with Q&A. \nThe 11th Annual Outdoor Sculpture Garden Exhibition debuted on May 1st\, and will remain on view year-round until April 2027. At nearly 3\,000 square feet\, the Range Lights Sculpture Garden resides behind the historic NAA and is seen and visited by hundreds of people every week. This year’s exhibition features 16 pieces by 10 local and regional artists. The participating artists include; Jeffrey Briggs\, Lindley Briggs\, Sarah Burns and Mike Platt\, Alexis Guieb-Alimbuyuguen\, Andrew Henschel\, Mae Kenny\, Evan Ralph\, Michael Updike and Raynor Warner. \nA reception for FOLIA and Soft Structures will be held on Saturday\, May 2nd from 4-6pm\, with the 11th Annual Sculpture Exhibit reception beginning at 3:00pm\, including a Best in Show award at 3:30pm. DESCRIPTION:Join Us Mid-Day for Artful Conversations \nTake a midday pause and experience one work of art in depth.\nArtful Conversations are informal\, docent-led gallery experiences that invite visitors to slow down\, look closely\, and engage in thoughtful conversation. Each session features a work of art or object that is new to view—whether a recent acquisition or a work newly installed in the galleries. \nThe program begins in the Education Room at our Downtown Campus with a brief introduction and visual context before moving into the galleries for an extended exploration of the featured work. Guided by observation\, curiosity\, and conversation\, participants are encouraged to share ideas\, consider different perspectives\, and discover new connections together. \nThis week for Artful Conversations \nThe program will offer an in‑depth look at John Sloan’s Scavenger Rocks\, a recent acquisition that deepens our understanding of the artist’s long-standing ties to East Gloucester. The presentation begins with a brief overview of Sloan’s stays at the Red Cottage from 1914 to 1918\, a formative period that shaped many of his most compelling Cape Ann paintings. From there\, the talk turns to the granite outcropping near Niles Beach\, drawing on contemporary photographic documentation to illuminate the site’s distinctive forms and its role in Sloan’s artistic process\, offering a vivid\, tangible link between the artwork and the landscape that inspired it. \nDan Duffy and his wife Helene have been Innkeepers at the Beech Tree B&B in Rockport for 16 years. In this capacity\, he takes pride in serving as an ambassador of goodwill for travelers from around the world. He is passionate about showcasing our region’s rich history\, geographical uniqueness\, and artistic treasurers. As a Cape Ann Museum docent\, Dan uses his experience connecting with visitors while deepening his own knowledge of the Museum and of the region’s vibrant social and cultural history.

DESCRIPTION:Cape Ann Shakespeare Troupe (CAST) kicks off its 2026-27 season with Laugh Out Loud. Shakespeare’s quote “Prepare for mirth\, for mirth becomes a feast.” aptly describes this feast of modern one-act comedies: Base Model Man and Who Ate the Cheetos? by Kevin Perrin of the Gloucester Writers Center\, and Black Comedy by Peter Shaffer. \nBase Model Man\, directed by Alexis Armstrong\, imagines a dealership where a woman shops for the perfect man with available upgrades such as “willing to share housework” and “actually listens”. Directed by Billy Lewand\, Who Ate the Cheetos? is an eight minute comedy in which a simple family mystery erupts into a full-blown courtroom style confrontation a la A Few Good Men. In the classic farce Black Comedy\, directed by Mark Efinger\, a young artist and his fiancée secretly furnish their apartment with a neighbor’s expensive antiques before meeting her intimidating military father. When the electricity fails and unexpected guests arrive – a suspicious neighbor\, a nervous spinster\, a talkative electrician\, and an old girlfriend—the comic chaos escalates. \nPerforming from November 5th-8th and 12th-15th\, all performances are at The Natti-Willsky Performance Center: Home of Gloucester Stage Company\, 267 East Main Street\, Gloucester. A Living Landscape in Motion brings together artists from the Great Marsh Artists Fellowship for an exhibition celebrating three years of artistic exploration\, collaboration\, and engagement with one of New England’s most significant coastal landscapes. \nThe exhibition features work by artists who have participated in the Great Marsh Artists Fellowship\, a program created to support artists in developing new projects inspired by the Great Marsh\, its natural and man-made history and significance\, as well as its beauty and immediate fragility. Over the past three years\, 22 artists have been selected as Great Marsh Artist Fellows and have dedicated themselves to creating 24 projects that connect art\, ecology\, history\, science\, and community. Some have been completed and presented to the community\, others are still underway. \nThe exhibition marks an important milestone in a partnership that began with The Great Marsh Concert in 2023\, a collaboration between Manship Artists Residency and Artists for the Great Marsh. The concert brought artists and members of the Great Marsh community together around a shared interest in the landscape and its future. That initial collaboration led to the formation of the Great Marsh Artists Fellowship\, which provides $2\,000 grants to artists to develop projects that premiere at organizations and institutions connected to the Great Marsh. \nThe fellowship has grown into a network of artists and organizational partners extending across the Great Marsh region. Over the past three years\, fellows have developed and presented projects with organizations including Essex Heritage\, Greenbelt\, Essex County’s Land Trust\, Mass Audubon\, Parker River National Wildlife Refuge\, The Trustees of Reservations\, TownGreen\, Essex National Heritage Area\, Historic New England\, Massachusetts Bay National Estuary Program\, Merrimack Valley Planning Commission\, Plum Island Ecosystems LTER at the Marine Biological Laboratory\, and the Wilkie Center for the Performing Arts and Bass Institute at The Governor’s Academy. The Great Marsh Artists Fellowship and this exhibition are funded in part by the Kathleen Van Demark Fund for the Great Marsh. \nRather than asking artists simply to interpret the marsh\, the fellowship invites them to spend time with the places\, people\, histories\, species\, and questions that make up this extraordinary landscape. The resulting projects have taken many forms\, demonstrating the range of ways artists can engage with a living ecosystem. \n“The Great Marsh Starts Here!” reflects both the geography and the philosophy of the exhibition. The Great Marsh begins here\, but it also extends outward—through waterways\, wildlife\, communities\, working landscapes\, and the many people who care for and experience it. The exhibition offers a chance to see the Great Marsh through the eyes of artists who have spent time observing\, listening\, researching\, imagining\, and creating in relationship to the landscape. \nArtists and Works\nThe exhibition brings together work by 18 of the 22 Great Marsh Artists Fellows including Resa Blatman\, Gail Boyajian\, Marcia Ciro\, Robert J. Bradshaw\, Michele Brody\, Anne Eder\, Karen Futral\, Isaac Grenader\, Robert Honstein\, Jenn Houle\, Amy Kaczur\, Andrea LeBlanc\, Susan Quateman\, Katie Pustizzi\, Norah Solorzano\, Erika Sutter\, and Alex Young. \nThe work presented moves across artistic disciplines and mediums—from painting\, photography\, and sculpture to video\, book art\, music\, animation\, and dance—revealing the many ways a living landscape can be seen\, experienced\, interpreted\, and expressed. \nAbout the Great Marsh Artists Fellowship\nThe Great Marsh Artists Fellowship was established following the 2023 Great Marsh Concert\, a collaboration between Manship Artists Residency and Artists for the Great Marsh. SUMMARY:Cape Ann Shakespeare Troupe presents Laugh Out Loud
DESCRIPTION:Cape Ann Shakespeare Troupe (CAST) kicks off its 2026-27 season with Laugh Out Loud. Shakespeare’s quote “Prepare for mirth\, for mirth becomes a feast.” aptly describes this feast of modern one-act comedies: Base Model Man and Who Ate the Cheetos? by Kevin Perrin of the Gloucester Writers Center\, and Black Comedy by Peter Shaffer. \nBase Model Man\, directed by Alexis Armstrong\, imagines a dealership where a woman shops for the perfect man with available upgrades such as “willing to share housework” and “actually listens”. Directed by Billy Lewand\, Who Ate the Cheetos? is an eight minute comedy in which a simple family mystery erupts into a full-blown courtroom style confrontation a la A Few Good Men. In the classic farce Black Comedy\, directed by Mark Efinger\, a young artist and his fiancée secretly furnish their apartment with a neighbor’s expensive antiques before meeting her intimidating military father. When the electricity fails and unexpected guests arrive – a suspicious neighbor\, a nervous spinster\, a talkative electrician\, and an old girlfriend—the comic chaos escalates. \nPerforming from November 5th-8th and 12th-15th\, all performances are at The Natti-Willsky Performance Center: Home of Gloucester Stage Company\, 267 East Main Street\, Gloucester.
