They meet outdoors once a week to work in their variety of mediums\, to support each other and discuss critiques. These two groups exhibit annually in the Hills Gallery as part of the art gallery’s Featured Interest Groups. \nThe Newburyport Ten and Band of Brushes paint en plein air (a French expression meaning painting outdoors)\, sharing a love of nature and paint in oil\, watercolor\, pastel and acrylic. They meet outdoors once a week to work in their variety of mediums\, to support each other and discuss critiques. SUMMARY:Newburyport Art presents May Exhibitions at 65 Water Street
DESCRIPTION:Newburyport Art (NAA) presents three new shows opening in the month of May! \nSoft Structures is a group exhibition that explores fibers and fibrous material as process and metaphor. This exhibit features over 80 artworks in a variety of media including drawing\, painting\, sculpture\, weaving\, embroidery\, quilting\, collage\, mixed media and more.\nThis exhibit is on view in the first-floor Sargent Gallery and second-floor Hartson Gallery. \nFOLIA is a collaborative exhibition featuring works by Amesbury artists Amy Vander Els & Heather Karp. This exhibit explores the quiet beauty and joyful rhythm of leaves and the symbolic meaning behind many that speaks of perseverance\, resilience and hope. Thirty-six artworks are displayed amongst spring greenery in the first-floor Hills Gallery. Amy and Heather will give a free artist talk on Thursday\, May 21st from 6:00-7:00pm\, concluding with Q&A. \nThe 11th Annual Outdoor Sculpture Garden Exhibition debuted on May 1st\, and will remain on view year-round until April 2027. At nearly 3\,000 square feet\, the Range Lights Sculpture Garden resides behind the historic NAA and is seen and visited by hundreds of people every week. This year’s exhibition features 16 pieces by 10 local and regional artists. The participating artists include; Jeffrey Briggs\, Lindley Briggs\, Sarah Burns and Mike Platt\, Alexis Guieb-Alimbuyuguen\, Andrew Henschel\, Mae Kenny\, Evan Ralph\, Michael Updike and Raynor Warner. \nA reception for FOLIA and Soft Structures will be held on Saturday\, May 2nd from 4-6pm\, with the 11th Annual Sculpture Exhibit reception beginning at 3:00pm\, including a Best in Show award at 3:30pm. The receptions are free and open to the public\, and visitors participating in the May 2nd Newburyport Artwalk are encouraged to stop by. \nNew Hours: Wednesday through Sunday from 11:00am–5:00pm. SUMMARY:Yin Yu Tang: A Chinese Home Tour
DESCRIPTION:Step inside a 200-year-old Chinese home in Salem to experience Chinese art\, architecture and culture. \nFor 200 years\, Yin Yu Tang stood in the rural village of Huang Cun in a mountainous region of southeastern China. Home to eight generations of the Huang family\, this house was dismantled\, transported and re-erected at the Peabody Essex Museum in 2003 through a partnership between PEM and the governmental authorities of Huizhou\, in Anhui Province. Yin Yu Tang’s journey constitutes a landmark collaboration between Chinese and American architects\, artisans\, conservators\, engineers and museum experts. The home is presented as it was when the family last lived there in 1982. \nPlan Your Visit\nExercise care\nPlease help us preserve the house for future generations by refraining from touching objects and the structure itself. Non-flash photography and videography is permitted for personal use only. Tripods and selfie sticks are not allowed. Please walk with care and watch out for uneven stonework and raised thresholds. \nStore your belongings\, but keep your coat\nYin Yu Tang is partially outdoors and may be cool in fall and winter. Strollers\, bags\, backpacks and umbrellas are not permitted in the house. Please leave them at the coatroom or the cubbies by the Information desk. DESCRIPTION:Discover the magic when individual objects\, no matter how similar or different\, are joined into an entirely new work at the Cove Gallery in Rocky Neck \nAugust 27\, 2026 – September 20\, 2026 Cove Gallery\nOpening reception: Thursday\, August 27 from 5 to 8pm \nGloucester\, MA — The act of assembly reveals\, to the artist\, new forms\, new relationships of color and shape. Perhaps another unit can be placed over here\, or a new piece added there\, giving a fresh and unexpected whole. These works by five Rocky Neck members explore assemblage\, in its broadest sense. Using materials ranging from wire\, corrugated cardboard\, reclaimed wood and hardware\, to toy figures\, rocks\, and recycled flameworked glass the pieces become\, in the hands of the contributing artists\, surprising and delightful 3-D works. \nThe artists in this show include: \nDavid Covert has been involved in art making for nearly fifty years. Basically self-taught\, by virtue of continuing to draw\, paint\, and occasionally sculpt since the late sixties. Much of his work has been in the two-dimensional arts\, dominated by drawing and painting and printmaking. His training has been mostly informal\, interspersed with individual classes at Boston area art schools including the Museum School of the MFA\, Mass College of Art\, and the late DeCordova Museum school. He settled in Beverly\, Massachusetts\, where he continues to work with ad agencies and individual clients. In between he still finds time to create original artwork made from scrap materials. Her assemblages incorporate objects collected during her travels. Her work begins with a found frame. She composes intuitively using an evolving collection of jewelry\, watch parts\, hardware\, book covers and other objects that she has collected over time. Some pieces have personal history\, while others are chosen for their beauty or character or the story they suggest. She transforms these elements into compositions I call “jewels”. What was once discarded or put aside becomes precious. She creates these works to encourage others to look for beauty in the ordinary and overlooked objects and to recognize the potential in everyday objects and to\, hopefully\, inspire curiosity\, reflection and a deeper appreciation for the unexpected. Marion earned her BFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design. Her work is held in private collections in New York City\, Cape Ann and beyond. \nJudy Robinson-Cox creates miniature shadowboxes\, collages and small assembled sculptures using a variety of found objects and tiny plastic people. She creates these light-hearted artworks to make people smile and appreciate the world in which we live. She attended NYU School of Fine Arts and earned a BFA from the University of Connecticut with additional classes at Montserrat College of Art. Winding through more dark secrets from the city’s past\, it finishes by following the steps of a notorious murderer into the Gardner-Pingree House. The killing of Joseph White gripped Salem and the country in 1830 with its brawling brothers\, custom-built murder weapons\, conspiring family members and a body that was autopsied three times. Follow PEM’s expert guides into the room where it happened – then head into the museum to visit our exhibition Salem Stories and see the real club used by White’s killers. \nThis is an indoor/outdoor tour. Please dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes. We’ll see you rain or shine! \nThis tour involves walking around 0.5 miles\, standing on hard surfaces and the use of stairs. DESCRIPTION:Discover the magic when individual objects\, no matter how similar or different\, are joined into an entirely new work at the Cove Gallery in Rocky Neck \nAugust 27\, 2026 – September 20\, 2026 Cove Gallery\nOpening reception: Thursday\, August 27 from 5 to 8pm \nGloucester\, MA — The act of assembly reveals\, to the artist\, new forms\, new relationships of color and shape. Perhaps another unit can be placed over here\, or a new piece added there\, giving a fresh and unexpected whole. These works by five Rocky Neck members explore assemblage\, in its broadest sense. Using materials ranging from wire\, corrugated cardboard\, reclaimed wood and hardware\, to toy figures\, rocks\, and recycled flameworked glass the pieces become\, in the hands of the contributing artists\, surprising and delightful 3-D works. \nThe artists in this show include: \nDavid Covert has been involved in art making for nearly fifty years. Basically self-taught\, by virtue of continuing to draw\, paint\, and occasionally sculpt since the late sixties. Much of his work has been in the two-dimensional arts\, dominated by drawing and painting and printmaking. His training has been mostly informal\, interspersed with individual classes at Boston area art schools including the Museum School of the MFA\, Mass College of Art\, and the late DeCordova Museum school. For more information see https://www.davidcovert.art/. \nBrian Murphy graduated from Rhode Island School of Design\, then off to NYC honing agency skills. He settled in Beverly\, Massachusetts\, where he continues to work with ad agencies and individual clients. In between he still finds time to create original artwork made from scrap materials. To learn more\, visit https://brianmurphyartanddesign.com/. \nMarion Powers is a mixed media artist and a painter who lives and works in Manchester-by-the-Sea. Her assemblages incorporate objects collected during her travels. Her work begins with a found frame. She composes intuitively using an evolving collection of jewelry\, watch parts\, hardware\, book covers and other objects that she has collected over time. Some pieces have personal history\, while others are chosen for their beauty or character or the story they suggest. She transforms these elements into compositions I call “jewels”. What was once discarded or put aside becomes precious. She creates these works to encourage others to look for beauty in the ordinary and overlooked objects and to recognize the potential in everyday objects and to\, hopefully\, inspire curiosity\, reflection and a deeper appreciation for the unexpected. Marion earned her BFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design. Her work is held in private collections in New York City\, Cape Ann and beyond. \nJudy Robinson-Cox creates miniature shadowboxes\, collages and small assembled sculptures using a variety of found objects and tiny plastic people. She creates these light-hearted artworks to make people smile and appreciate the world in which we live. She attended NYU School of Fine Arts and earned a BFA from the University of Connecticut with additional classes at Montserrat College of Art. Using light and transparency in surprising ways along with layering color on color helps her to create unusual contemporary beads\, jewelry and small sculptures. She gleans inspiration from her gardens\, the ever-changing light on the ocean\, the seascapes that surround her … anywhere colors collide in nature. Join us for a behind-the-scenes guided tour that pairs our most popular\, haunting walking tour with an inside look at objects from the PEM collection. \nSinister Streets & Salem Stories starts at the Ward House\, which stood within sight of the 1692 Salem Witch Trials hangings on Gallows Hill\, and within earshot of the cries of the accused from the Salem jail. Winding through more dark secrets from the city’s past\, it finishes by following the steps of a notorious murderer into the Gardner-Pingree House. The killing of Joseph White gripped Salem and the country in 1830 with its brawling brothers\, custom-built murder weapons\, conspiring family members and a body that was autopsied three times. Follow PEM’s expert guides into the room where it happened – then head into the museum to visit our exhibition Salem Stories and see the real club used by White’s killers. \nThis is an indoor/outdoor tour. Please dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes. We’ll see you rain or shine! \nThis tour involves walking around 0.5 miles\, standing on hard surfaces and the use of stairs. Historic structures are not ADA accessible. Strollers may be used on the tours\, but may not be brought into any of the historic structures. Historic houses may include areas of low lighting and uneven surfaces.
