That’s exactly what makes this temporary exhibition so special. \nJoin Hammond Castle Museum for an exclusive opening celebration of “Brave-Too-Much”: The Legend of John Coffee Hays\, an original temporary exhibition presented in partnership with the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum in Waco\, Texas. Through the loan of museum artwork and fascinating stories\, this unique exhibition introduces New England audiences to the legendary Texas Ranger captain who was also the great-uncle and namesake of John Hays Hammond Jr. \nThe exhibition traces Hays’s extraordinary journey from joining the Texas Rangers at just 19 years old to becoming one of the most respected military leaders of his era. DESCRIPTION:Join Us Mid-Day for Artful Conversations\nTake a midday pause and experience one work of art in depth. \nArtful Conversations are informal\, docent-led gallery experiences that invite visitors to slow down\, look closely\, and engage in thoughtful conversation. Each session features a work of art or object that is new to view—whether a recent acquisition or a work newly installed in the galleries. \nThe program begins in the Education Room at our Downtown Campus with a brief introduction and visual context before moving into the galleries for an extended exploration of the featured work. Guided by observation\, curiosity\, and conversation\, participants are encouraged to share ideas\, consider different perspectives\, and discover new connections together. \nThis week for Artful Conversations \nIn 2025\, CAM acquired two 2023 photographs by Matika Wilbur as part of the Museum’s Native Initiatives\, a project that culminated in a landmark exhibition of Wilbur’s work at the CAM Green. Wilbur’s work reshapes how Indigenous Peoples are represented across the United States\, centering contemporary Native identity and celebrating the vibrancy of Indigenous culture today. \nPlease join CAM docent Maggie Rosa for an engaging conversation as she reflects on what these photographs reveal—about the photographer\, about the individuals portrayed\, and about the evolving stories they invite us to understand more deeply. \nBorn and raised in England\, Maggie Rosa moved to the Chicago in 1968 to work as a research technician at the University of Chicago. During her eight years in Chicago\, she married Joe and obtained her PhD. The two of them did post-doctoral research at Yale and then moved to Cambridge to join the nascent biotech world. They eventually built a weekend home in Gloucester. In 2001 they “saw the light” and moved here permanently to participate in this great community. Maggie is an active volunteer in local organizations\, most recently the City Hall Restoration Commission\, Gloucester Education Foundation\, Cape Ann Museum\, and Generous Gardeners. As a Cape Ann Museum docent\, she serves as an ambassador for Gloucester by introducing visitors\, especially cruise ship visitors\, to Cape Ann’s history and culture. CAM’s Fresnel lighthouse lens is her favorite piece in the Museum because it exemplifies how science\, technology and art were combined to address an urgent need in maritime safety.

SUMMARY:Choate Island Day
DESCRIPTION:Spend a day with us in celebration of Choate Island – the crown jewel of the Crane Wildlife Refuge. Here\, deer and foxes roam through fields that once housed herds of sheep\, and osprey fly over breathtaking views of Essex Bay. The island was first home to indigenous farmers and fishers\, then to generations of the Choate family\, and was later a retreat for Cornelius and Miné Crane\, who loved the place so much they decided to be buried at the summit. \nThis year\, we are again offering both a Self-Guided and Guided experience. Both will allow visitors to explore the extent of the island. The Guided experience will be led by a trained guide for the first 90 minutes of the program on a more thoroughly interpreted walk across the island\, after which visitors will be free to take their time getting back to the boat dock. The Guided experience starts at the island-side boat dock and ends at the Choate Island summit. However\, we will have staff and volunteers scattered across the island to provide interpretation for self-guided visitors as well. See ticketing options below for Guided and Self-Guided tours. \nPark at Crane Beach\, which is at the end of Argilla Road. Parking will be free for this event. Board our shuttle bus to take you straight down to the boat dock (less than 5-minute drive). There you can check in (if you purchased tickets online) or buy tickets “at the door” (if available) before boarding the ferry to the island\, which is less than a 10-minute boat trip one-way. The shuttles will run continuously between 10AM and 3PM. The last boat returns from the island at 3PM. \nBelow is a sampling of events for the day (subject to change): \nTalks on Choate Island life\, human\, and natural history\nProctor Barn open house\nChoate House self-guided tours\nHikes to the Crane Burial Site\nSelf-guided walking tour\nKids scavenger hunt\nShoreline walk and beachcombing\nLight refreshments will be served.
