Join soprano Karen Slack as she shares her inspiration and insight into her latest commissioning project, African Queens. The program features eight newly commissioned art songs by some of today’s most acclaimed composers including – Jasmine Barnes, Damien Geter, Jessie Montgomery, and Carlos Simon. Come hear about the process of working with the composers, and the stories that became the inspiration for each song. During her research with creative collaborator, Jay Saint Flono, many powerful stories were found to represent African Royalty and each composer selected the story of whichever queen spoke to them.
“This is why I created this recital in the first place – so that it sparks interest to develop and present these stories that have been historically ignored.” – From and interview with I Care if You Listen.
Location: Shalin Liu Performance Center Third Floor
