SUMMARY:Newburyport Art presents the 2026 OpArt Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Newburyport Art (NAA) presents the 2026 OpArt Exhibit\, on view from April 1st through April 25th. This exhibit features over 90 art pieces by artists from Opportunity Works\, as well as a series of portraits of the OpArt artists created by John Douglass. \nThe OpArt program founded in 2004 is a partnership between the Newburyport Art Association and Opportunity Works with a mission to encourage and support individuals with disabilities to fulfill their life ambitions through the creative process. OpArt is dedicated to empowering people with disabilities to enrich their lives through visionary expression and artistic practice by providing instruction in a variety of mediums and techniques. Artists are encouraged to work freely and experiment across different media (paint pastels\, collage\, drawing\, sculpture\, etc.) to produce artwork centered on a theme or their imagination. \nOn view alongside this exhibit are 36 portraits of OpArt artists created by John Douglass.\nJohn became an OpArt volunteer after meeting several artists during the 2025 OpArt Show at Newburyport Art. John writes that “At first I thought I’d paint just a few portraits\, for practice. At a class\, I showed one student his portrait\, and the idea of including it in this show came up. The student was so excited about that possibility-I knew then I needed to paint them all.” In the end\, John painted 36 portraits (and one opossum) over a five-month period-getting more practice than he intended. The OpArt team of volunteers hopes visitors enjoy the artwork and John’s portraits\, and recognize as we do\, the joy these gifted artists bring to our community. \nAn Artist Reception & Celebration will be held on Thursday\, April 9th from 11:00am to 1:00pm. The reception is free and open to the public\, with light refreshments being served. \nNEW Gallery Hours: Wednesday through Sunday from 11:00am–5:00pm. The NAA is handicap accessible. More information\, and an online gallery is available at newburyportart.org.

SUMMARY:Emerging Perspectives\, Works by Artists 18-30
DESCRIPTION:‘Emerging Perspectives’ is a juried exhibition illuminating the vital and evolving voices of the region’s next generation of artists. This showcase serves as a bridge between the storied traditions of America’s oldest continuously operating art colony and the imaginative inquiries of creators aged 18 to 30. \nSelected by the RNAC Exhibitions Committee\, the exhibition presents a focused collection of work that captures a moment of professional becoming. Spanning a wide range of media\, the collection reflects a deep commitment to personal exploration and the pursuit of a distinct visual language. By facilitating a dialogue between these rising artists and the established creative lineage of Gloucester\, the Rocky Neck Art Colony continues its 150-year legacy of fostering the future of the arts. \n‘Emerging Perspectives’ is an invitation to witness the initial professional steps of those who will shape our cultural landscape. It offers a rare glimpse into the burgeoning careers of artists as they transition their practice into the public sphere. We invite the community to observe this growth and support the creative spirit that defines our region. \nThe public is invited to celebrate these new perspectives at the Opening Reception on Sunday\, April 12\, 2026\, from 4-6:00pm. Join Rocky Neck Art Colony and the artists to experience the collection\, meet the artists\, and enjoy an afternoon of refreshments and lively conversation. \nGallery Hours: Friday – Sunday\, 12-5pm \nArtwork by: (clockwise) Ben Laird\, Blocks; Ethan LeJeune\, Standing Stones; Rory Kenney\, Be There; Tia Camire\, Prey

SUMMARY:Thomas Dolby at the Spire Center (Plymouth)
DESCRIPTION:Perhaps best known for blinding us with science\, Thomas Dolby has always blurred the lines between composition and invention. \nDolby is associated with the new wave movement of the early 1980s\, a form of pop music incorporating electronic instruments\, but Dolby’s work covers a wide range of musical styles and moods distinct from the high-energy pop sound of his few\, better-known commercial successes. \nIn the 1990s\, Dolby founded Beatnik\, a Silicon Valley software company which developed the polyphonic ringtone software and created the Nokia tune. Its technology was used in more than half a billion cell phones. He was also the music director for TED Conferences. On the faculty at the Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins University since 2014\, Dolby leads Peabody’s Music for New Media program\, which enrolled its first students in the fall of 2018. \nIn July 1998\, Dolby received a “Lifetime Achievement in Internet Music” award from Yahoo! Internet Life. In 2012 he performed at Moogfest and was the recipient of The Moog Innovation Award\, which celebrates “pioneering artists whose genre-defying work exemplifies the bold\, innovative spirit of Bob Moog”. In February 2018\, Dolby was awarded the Roland Lifetime Achievement Award. Dolby has received four Grammy nominations\, two each in 1984 and 1988. \n
