DESCRIPTION:Discover the magic when individual objects\, no matter how similar or different\, are joined into an entirely new work at the Cove Gallery in Rocky Neck \nAugust 27\, 2026 – September 20\, 2026 Cove Gallery\nOpening reception: Thursday\, August 27 from 5 to 8pm \nGloucester\, MA — The act of assembly reveals\, to the artist\, new forms\, new relationships of color and shape. Perhaps another unit can be placed over here\, or a new piece added there\, giving a fresh and unexpected whole. These works by five Rocky Neck members explore assemblage\, in its broadest sense. Using materials ranging from wire\, corrugated cardboard\, reclaimed wood and hardware\, to toy figures\, rocks\, and recycled flameworked glass the pieces become\, in the hands of the contributing artists\, surprising and delightful 3-D works. \nThe artists in this show include: \nDavid Covert has been involved in art making for nearly fifty years. Basically self-taught\, by virtue of continuing to draw\, paint\, and occasionally sculpt since the late sixties. Much of his work has been in the two-dimensional arts\, dominated by drawing and painting and printmaking. His training has been mostly informal\, interspersed with individual classes at Boston area art schools including the Museum School of the MFA\, Mass College of Art\, and the late DeCordova Museum school. He settled in Beverly\, Massachusetts\, where he continues to work with ad agencies and individual clients. In between he still finds time to create original artwork made from scrap materials. Her assemblages incorporate objects collected during her travels. Her work begins with a found frame. She composes intuitively using an evolving collection of jewelry\, watch parts\, hardware\, book covers and other objects that she has collected over time. Some pieces have personal history\, while others are chosen for their beauty or character or the story they suggest. She transforms these elements into compositions I call “jewels”. What was once discarded or put aside becomes precious. She creates these works to encourage others to look for beauty in the ordinary and overlooked objects and to recognize the potential in everyday objects and to\, hopefully\, inspire curiosity\, reflection and a deeper appreciation for the unexpected. Marion earned her BFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design. Her work is held in private collections in New York City\, Cape Ann and beyond. \nJudy Robinson-Cox creates miniature shadowboxes\, collages and small assembled sculptures using a variety of found objects and tiny plastic people. She creates these light-hearted artworks to make people smile and appreciate the world in which we live. She attended NYU School of Fine Arts and earned a BFA from the University of Connecticut with additional classes at Montserrat College of Art. DESCRIPTION:Newburyport Art (NAA) is excited to announce Fleeting Moments: Spontaneous Photography by Featured Artist Geordie Vining. \nGeordie Vining has worked as the Senior Project Manager for the Newburyport Planning Office for 25 years. Among many projects\, Geordie managed the creation of the Clipper City Rail Trail from concept to completion. He also managed design and construction of the Senior Community Center\, the John F. Cutter Jr. Fire Station\, and the Harbormaster Visiting Boater Facility\, as well as co-founded the award-winning Newburyport Black History Initiative. \nOutside of his work for the Newburyport Planning Office\, Geordie is a photographer who focuses on capturing a range of unplanned photographs of unique “fleeting moments.” Vining writes\, “Such pictures can speak to the human condition\, tell a story\, and hold on to a glimpse of fleeting beauty.” His photographs are nearly all spontaneous and unplanned\, ranging from close-ups to wide shots\, and from vibrant colors to classic black-and-white. The images are of people; townscapes and cityscapes; landscapes; the natural world; and abstract or ambiguous scenes. DESCRIPTION:Newburyport Art (NAA) is excited to announce Fleeting Moments: Spontaneous Photography by Featured Artist Geordie Vining. \nGeordie Vining has worked as the Senior Project Manager for the Newburyport Planning Office for 25 years. Among many projects\, Geordie managed the creation of the Clipper City Rail Trail from concept to completion. He also managed design and construction of the Senior Community Center\, the John F. Cutter Jr. Fire Station\, and the Harbormaster Visiting Boater Facility\, as well as co-founded the award-winning Newburyport Black History Initiative. \nOutside of his work for the Newburyport Planning Office\, Geordie is a photographer who focuses on capturing a range of unplanned photographs of unique “fleeting moments.” Vining writes\, “Such pictures can speak to the human condition\, tell a story\, and hold on to a glimpse of fleeting beauty.” His photographs are nearly all spontaneous and unplanned\, ranging from close-ups to wide shots\, and from vibrant colors to classic black-and-white. The images are of people; townscapes and cityscapes; landscapes; the natural world; and abstract or ambiguous scenes. Many of the pictures are of his home in New England\, but also from other parts of the United States\, as well as countries like Norway\, Portugal\, Canada\, France\, England\, Italy\, Croatia\, Japan\, and a growing list of others. Perhaps another unit can be placed over here\, or a new piece added there\, giving a fresh and unexpected whole. These works by five Rocky Neck members explore assemblage\, in its broadest sense. Using materials ranging from wire\, corrugated cardboard\, reclaimed wood and hardware\, to toy figures\, rocks\, and recycled flameworked glass the pieces become\, in the hands of the contributing artists\, surprising and delightful 3-D works. \nThe artists in this show include: \nDavid Covert has been involved in art making for nearly fifty years. Basically self-taught\, by virtue of continuing to draw\, paint\, and occasionally sculpt since the late sixties. Much of his work has been in the two-dimensional arts\, dominated by drawing and painting and printmaking. His training has been mostly informal\, interspersed with individual classes at Boston area art schools including the Museum School of the MFA\, Mass College of Art\, and the late DeCordova Museum school. Following retirement from Project Management work at Wang Corp\, Compac\, and Fidelity\, Jay served as President of the Board of Directors at Newburyport Art\, and thoroughly enjoyed his years working there as Gallery Associate and Moderator of the Photo Interest Group. He particularly enjoyed introducing photography classes to Veterans and young students as well.\nJay was married to Nancy McCarthy who is hosting this exhibit. DESCRIPTION:Discover the magic when individual objects\, no matter how similar or different\, are joined into an entirely new work at the Cove Gallery in Rocky Neck \nAugust 27\, 2026 – September 20\, 2026 Cove Gallery\nOpening reception: Thursday\, August 27 from 5 to 8pm \nGloucester\, MA — The act of assembly reveals\, to the artist\, new forms\, new relationships of color and shape. Perhaps another unit can be placed over here\, or a new piece added there\, giving a fresh and unexpected whole. These works by five Rocky Neck members explore assemblage\, in its broadest sense. Using materials ranging from wire\, corrugated cardboard\, reclaimed wood and hardware\, to toy figures\, rocks\, and recycled flameworked glass the pieces become\, in the hands of the contributing artists\, surprising and delightful 3-D works. \nThe artists in this show include: \nDavid Covert has been involved in art making for nearly fifty years. Basically self-taught\, by virtue of continuing to draw\, paint\, and occasionally sculpt since the late sixties. Much of his work has been in the two-dimensional arts\, dominated by drawing and painting and printmaking. His training has been mostly informal\, interspersed with individual classes at Boston area art schools including the Museum School of the MFA\, Mass College of Art\, and the late DeCordova Museum school. Her assemblages incorporate objects collected during her travels. Her work begins with a found frame. Some pieces have personal history\, while others are chosen for their beauty or character or the story they suggest. She transforms these elements into compositions I call “jewels”. What was once discarded or put aside becomes precious. She creates these works to encourage others to look for beauty in the ordinary and overlooked objects and to recognize the potential in everyday objects and to\, hopefully\, inspire curiosity\, reflection and a deeper appreciation for the unexpected. Marion earned her BFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design. Her work is held in private collections in New York City\, Cape Ann and beyond. \nJudy Robinson-Cox creates miniature shadowboxes\, collages and small assembled sculptures using a variety of found objects and tiny plastic people. She creates these light-hearted artworks to make people smile and appreciate the world in which we live. Perhaps another unit can be placed over here\, or a new piece added there\, giving a fresh and unexpected whole. These works by five Rocky Neck members explore assemblage\, in its broadest sense. Using materials ranging from wire\, corrugated cardboard\, reclaimed wood and hardware\, to toy figures\, rocks\, and recycled flameworked glass the pieces become\, in the hands of the contributing artists\, surprising and delightful 3-D works. \nThe artists in this show include: \nDavid Covert has been involved in art making for nearly fifty years. Basically self-taught\, by virtue of continuing to draw\, paint\, and occasionally sculpt since the late sixties. Much of his work has been in the two-dimensional arts\, dominated by drawing and painting and printmaking. His training has been mostly informal\, interspersed with individual classes at Boston area art schools including the Museum School of the MFA\, Mass College of Art\, and the late DeCordova Museum school. Some pieces have personal history\, while others are chosen for their beauty or character or the story they suggest. She transforms these elements into compositions I call “jewels”. What was once discarded or put aside becomes precious. She creates these works to encourage others to look for beauty in the ordinary and overlooked objects and to recognize the potential in everyday objects and to\, hopefully\, inspire curiosity\, reflection and a deeper appreciation for the unexpected. Marion earned her BFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design. DESCRIPTION:Step inside a 200-year-old Chinese home in Salem to experience Chinese art\, architecture and culture. \nFor 200 years\, Yin Yu Tang stood in the rural village of Huang Cun in a mountainous region of southeastern China. Home to eight generations of the Huang family\, this house was dismantled\, transported and re-erected at the Peabody Essex Museum in 2003 through a partnership between PEM and the governmental authorities of Huizhou\, in Anhui Province. Yin Yu Tang’s journey constitutes a landmark collaboration between Chinese and American architects\, artisans\, conservators\, engineers and museum experts. The home is presented as it was when the family last lived there in 1982. \nPlan Your Visit\nExercise care\nPlease help us preserve the house for future generations by refraining from touching objects and the structure itself. Non-flash photography and videography is permitted for personal use only. Tripods and selfie sticks are not allowed. Rivera\, Editor | Moritz Hans Laub\, Composer \nFrom the Filmmaker\nAs a documentarian I am always looking for stories that have multiple levels of meaning. Yank Tanks was a clever way of dissecting the cultural truth behind the Cuban Embargo. The Comedy Club was a not-so-subtle look at the corporatization of standup comedy and its effects on freedom of expression. Enduring Democracy explores economic opportunism and the dangers when\nthat intersects with racism. And Painting at the Edge is a story about an eco-warrior that shows us how to forge a new relationship to nature. On the surface these films might seem as simple as “how do you keep an old car running without spare parts” but one level below there is a bigger question. I met Tony Foster when I was hired to produce a video about the opening of his museum in Palo Alto\, CA. My dad\, Alfred was a master watercolour painter and so when I saw Tony’s paintings\, I immediately recognized the talent in the work. Watercolour is by far the most difficult and unforgiving medium to paint in – believe me I tried! At his museum opening I was standing in front of one of the largest paintings I’ve ever seen of the Grand Canyon. Someone next to me asked what I thought of the painting. I replied “it’s a masterpiece but the colors look very pop art.” “Well\, I used to make pop art!” I turned to see it was Tony Foster himself. From that moment we had a trusting relationship because I had dared to critique the master directly. After several years of discussions about the shape of the film\, Tony and I decided to make the documentary about his life together. As a filmmaker this has been the most challenging adventure I have ever embarked upon. Most film production teams don’t need to worry about where they are going to charge their batteries or how much water is needed for an 8-day canoe trip. Besides the challenge and rigors of filming in the wilderness how do you tell a story about such a singular man? Tony was set on making the film while he was working in the wild\, so we packed the cameras\, tents and sleeping bags and made a film. The planet stands on the edge of an environmental collapse. We must change our relationship to our only home or very soon it could be uninhabitable. Tony is the perfect messenger for those of us looking for a better way and hopefully for those that need the message most.

Departing from Newburyport Harbor on Monday\, September 21 at 5:30 PM\, we’ll take in the last of the summer sunsets together. This exclusive evening on the water will bring together MRWC’s donors\, supporters\, and friends for a memorable experience at the place where the Merrimack River meets the sea. \nThe Sunset Sail is more than a beautiful evening aboard a historic schooner. It is a chance to gather in community\, celebrate the Merrimack River\, and look ahead to a cleaner\, safer future for Newburyport Harbor and the watershed we share. Guests can connect with MRWC’s leadership on the communities\, wildlife\, and working waterfronts that depend on clean water — and the shared responsibility we all have to protect it. \nThis event also comes at an important moment for MRWC’s work in Newburyport. After several years of concerning results in our water quality monitoring by our team and volunteers\, we are launching an investigation into persistent high bacteria levels in Newburyport Harbor. This Sunset Sail helps to support the science\, advocacy\, and community partnerships needed to better understand these challenges and work toward long-term solutions. \nGuests will sail aboard the Schooner Ardelle\, a beautiful historic vessel built and captained by Harold A. Burnham\, a master shipwright who has built several prominent local schooners. The Ardelle is rarely chartered out of Newburyport Harbor\, making this a unique opportunity to experience the lower Merrimack in a new way. \nAll proceeds from the Sunset Sail benefit MRWC’s mission to protect and restore the Merrimack River.
