SUMMARY:Yin Yu Tang: A Chinese Home Tour
DESCRIPTION:Step inside a 200-year-old Chinese home in Salem to experience Chinese art\, architecture and culture. \nFor 200 years\, Yin Yu Tang stood in the rural village of Huang Cun in a mountainous region of southeastern China. Home to eight generations of the Huang family\, this house was dismantled\, transported and re-erected at the Peabody Essex Museum in 2003 through a partnership between PEM and the governmental authorities of Huizhou\, in Anhui Province. The home is presented as it was when the family last lived there in 1982. \nPlan Your Visit\nExercise care\nPlease help us preserve the house for future generations by refraining from touching objects and the structure itself. Non-flash photography and videography is permitted for personal use only. Tripods and selfie sticks are not allowed. Please walk with care and watch out for uneven stonework and raised thresholds. \nStore your belongings\, but keep your coat\nYin Yu Tang is partially outdoors and may be cool in fall and winter. Our staff at the entrance of the house can look after strollers. \nPick up your audio guide in advance\nPlease pick up your complimentary audio guide\, available in English and Mandarin\, at the Information desk 10 minutes before your visit. Please note: Plan to bring your own pair of headphones. Before your visit\, press #50 to listen to an introduction to the house. Once inside\, look for stone blocks with two-digit numbers. Press the number plus the play > button to hear the audio. \nBe prompt\nPlease be at the doors to Yin Yu Tang five minutes before your scheduled visit with your audio guide in hand. SUMMARY:ECOC Lecture: The Resplendent Quetzal
DESCRIPTION:Join ornithologist Alan Poole for an exploration into the life and history of the Resplendent Quetzal — a dazzling\, legendary bird of the highland forests of Central America. Author of the recent book Quetzals: Icons of the Cloud Forest (2023)\, Poole will lead us through the nesting and feeding ecology of this renowned bird\, its role in Mayan and Aztec religions\, and how Resplendents fit into the increasingly threatened rain forests that sustain them. In addition\, we’ll take a look at what lies ahead for this (and other) quetzals — how conservation efforts are giving them a boost in some regions\, while in others the birds are struggling. This talk will touch on land use in Central America\, especially Costa Rica\, through a quetzal lens. No species does more to bring current land use trends in this region into focus. Understanding those trends is key to maintaining the viability of highland tropical forests in the Americas\, and the quetzals that depend on them. \nA book signing will follow the program.

SUMMARY:Noguchi and Japanese American Internment During World War II
DESCRIPTION:Join curator and scholar Christina Hiromi Hobbs for a talk examining Isamu Noguchi’s voluntary incarceration at the Poston War Relocation Center in Arizona during World War II. Hobbs will discuss Noguchi’s complex motivations for entering the camp\, discuss its impact on his life and work and examine the historical context of art making during Japanese American incarceration. \nAfter the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941\, more than 120\,000 people of Japanese ancestry were incarcerated in internment camps created on U.S. soil. Many lived there for the duration of the war. Read more about their stories — and why their experiences still matter today — from the Densho documentation project and Poston Preservation.
