SUMMARY:Billy Childs Trio
DESCRIPTION:Experience an evening with Billy Childs\, one of the most celebrated and visionary composers and pianists of our time. Widely regarded as among the foremost American composers of his generation\, Childs has forged a singular voice that seamlessly unites jazz\, classical\, and contemporary chamber music traditions—creating a richly expressive style that is both sophisticated and deeply personal. \nA six-time GRAMMY-Award winner and seventeen-time nominee\, Childs has been honored across genres\, receiving awards for Best Instrumental Composition\, Best Arrangement\, and Best Instrumental Jazz Album\, most recently for The Winds of Change. His groundbreaking ability to move fluidly between jazz improvisation and orchestral composition has earned him commissions from leading institutions including the Los Angeles Philharmonic\, Detroit Symphony\, National Symphony\, Kronos Quartet\, and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. His works have been performed at Carnegie Hall\, the Kennedy Center\, and Walt Disney Concert Hall. \nChilds first rose to prominence as a prodigious young pianist with J.J. Johnson and Freddie Hubbard\, launching a jazz career that has evolved into one of remarkable breadth. His recordings—ranging from the acclaimed Lyric and Autumn: In Moving Pictures to Map to the Treasure\, featuring artists such as Renée Fleming and Yo-Yo Ma—demonstrate his extraordinary range and collaborative spirit. \nIn performance\, Childs combines virtuosic piano artistry with compositional brilliance\, delivering music that is lyrical\, rhythmically vibrant\, and emotionally resonant. Whether in intimate trio settings or expansive chamber works\, Billy Childs offers a concert experience that bridges traditions and redefines the possibilities of American music.

SUMMARY:Rockport Music Presents: Skylark
DESCRIPTION:Six-time GRAMMY®-nominated Skylark presents Clear Voices in the Dark\, pairing Poulenc’s wartime masterpiece Figure Humaine with Civil War–era songs in a powerful reflection on the human voice in times of conflict. \nClear Voices in the Dark\nFrancis Poulenc’s Figure Humaine is one of the most extraordinary works composed for unaccompanied choir. Written in 1943 in occupied France and set to resistance-inspired poems by Paul Éluard\, it confronts the realities of war\, culminating in Liberté—an embattled cry for freedom.Clear Voices in the Dark places this work alongside music from the American Civil War\, bringing two periods of conflict into direct conversation. The recording of this program received two GRAMMY® nominations in 2024. The 2026 program also includes a new arrangement of America the Beautiful by Matthew Guard and Benedict Sheehan. \nThis performance will be filmed. Audience members may be visible in recorded material. \nAbout Skylark\nSix-time GRAMMY®-nominated Skylark creates moments that may live with you for the rest of your life. \nOur programs draw connections between music\, history\, art\, and place. Projects have included an exploration of hidden musical codes with Dan Brown; a meditation on human hope and resistance pairing Poulenc’s Figure Humaine with American Civil War songs; A Christmas Carol with Christine Baranski at the Morgan Library & Museum; an exploration of mathematics and music at MIT; Joby Talbot’s Path of Miracles at the Hispanic Society of America; and candlelit performances of medieval to modern sacred works at the Met Cloisters. \nFeatured in The New York Times\, Associated Press\, BBC\, and Gramophone. SUMMARY:Rockport Music Presents: A Far Cry and Anthony McGill\, clarinet
DESCRIPTION:A Far Cry joins Anthony McGill\, Principal Clarinet of the New York Philharmonic\, for a performance of Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto\, pairing McGill’s trademark brilliance with the ensemble’s adventurous\, collaborative spirit in a program of elegance\, vitality\, and shared musical purpose. \n“McGill has a silken tone\, but he possesses the admirable ability to vary it\, moving into the foreground or receding into the ensemble as in the swirling textures of the first movement.” San Diego Union-Tribune \nA FAR CRY\nA Far Cry is a Boston-based\, Grammy-nominated chamber orchestra acclaimed for its democratic structure\, adventurous programming\, and deeply engaged performances. WBUR has called the ensemble “a refreshing corrective to classical music’s rigid hierarchies\,” while Boston Arts Diary praises its “top-notch\, finely crafted\, precisely delivered performances” and “robust communal expressiveness.” Guided by the belief that music can help create “a world that listens\,” A Far Cry has become a model for artist-driven collaboration in classical music. \nNow in its nineteenth season\, A Far Cry presents nine distinctive programs shaped by themes such as memory\, migration\, love\, and the passage of time. The orchestra’s subscription series includes full-ensemble concerts at Jordan Hall at New England Conservatory and chamber music performances at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Jamaica Plain\, alongside appearances throughout the Boston area. The ensemble is known for collaborations that cross genres and cultures\, working with artists such as tenor Karim Sulayman\, cellist and singer-songwriter Yeemz\, and piri virtuoso Gamin. \nFounded without a single artistic director\, A Far Cry operates as a collective of musicians—known as “Criers”—who collaboratively curate programming inspired by individual curiosity\, shared values\, and current events. This approach fosters a wide-ranging repertoire\, strong audience engagement through initiatives like Listening Labs and family concerts\, and performances that feel both rigorously crafted and vividly alive. As The Boston Globe has observed\, even as A Far Cry has become a mainstay of the city’s musical life\, “something about it feels perpetually fresh with every performance.” \nANTHONY MCGILL\, clarinet\nAnthony McGill is one of classical music’s most distinctive and influential artists\, hailed by The New York Times for his “trademark brilliance\, penetrating sound\, and rich character.” He is Principal Clarinet of the New York Philharmonic\, making history as the first African-American principal player in the orchestra’s legacy\, and maintains a dynamic international career as a soloist\, chamber musician\, educator\, and cultural leader. \nMcGill appears regularly as a soloist with leading orchestras including the New York and Los Angeles Philharmonics\, the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra\, and the Baltimore\, Boston\, Chicago\, and Detroit Symphony Orchestras. Highlights of recent seasons include premieres of works by Billy Childs and Gabriel Kahane\, performances with The Knights at Carnegie Hall\, and appearances with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. An esteemed chamber musician\, he collaborates frequently with ensembles such as the Brentano\, Pacifica\, Takács\, Miró\, and Tokyo Quartets\, and with artists including Mitsuko Uchida\, Yefim Bronfman\, Gil Shaham\, and Midori. He is a regular presence at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and major festivals worldwide. \nA graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music\, McGill serves on the faculties of The Juilliard School and Curtis\, where he holds the William R. and Hyunah Yu Brody Distinguished Chair. Deeply committed to equity and access\, he is Artistic Director of Juilliard’s Music Advancement Program and an active advocate for social justice initiatives within and beyond the concert hall.
