How to Buy a Commuter Rail Ticket

FIRST — KNOW YOUR ZONE.

  • Every station falls into a fare zone, from 1A to 10.
  • Zone 1A includes stations in and closest to Boston. Zone 10 is furthest from Boston on each line.
  • Your fare price depends on how many zones you travel through.

NEXT — CHOOSE YOUR TICKET:

  • One-way gets you to your destination.
  • Round-trip gets you there and back.
  • Riding several times a week? Grab a Monthly Pass.

TICKETS ON THE GO

  • Use the mTicket app — download it to your smartphone and buy your ticket ahead of time by entering the station you are boarding and the station you are traveling to.
  • Ticket will automatically calculate your fare.
  • Activate your ticket in the app before you board. Once the ticket is activated, it is valid for the duration of your trip.
  • Tickets must be purchased before boarding at North Station and South Station in order to enter the platform area. If you board at a station without a fare vending machine, you may purchase a ticket directly from the conductor with a credit card or cash.

AND DON’T MISS THE DEALS:

  • $10 Weekend Passes, even on holidays and holiday weekends.
  • Kids 11 and under ride free!
  • Seniors, students, and people with disabilities are eligible for reduced fares.
