Get ready to hop on and off the Newburyport/Rockport Line using your unlimited $10 Weekend Ticket to experience a Saturday filled with museums, rock climbing and brewery tours.
First things first: Head to North Station and make a plan to get your $10 Weekend Ticket — available for purchase at North, South, or Back Bay stations, through the mTicket app or on board the train. Once you’re ready to ride, head to the platform and grab the outbound 1101 Newburyport/Rockport train at about 8:30 a.m. to get your day started.
Your first stop of the day? Lynn Station in Lynn, Massachusetts. Depart the train and take a short morning stroll to the Land of a Thousand Hills Coffee Company where you can treat yourself to a much-needed caffeine boost. Add in a breakfast burrito, cup of oatmeal or toasted bagel to make sure you’re well-fueled, and head back outside.
Next, take a walk around downtown Lynn to take in a few of the more than 50 vibrant murals (like the one from Yu-baba and Key Detail at 50 Silsbee Street) and light installations around the city, all managed by the nonprofit Beyond Walls. You can also explore IronBound Marketplace, an open air marketplace with a variety of vendors and food trucks. Once you’ve had your fill, make your way back to the station and grab your next ride.
Plan to arrive about 10 minutes early to ensure you catch the outbound 1151 Newburyport/Rockport train at around 9:51 a.m., then travel two quick stops to the Salem Station stop.
Welcome to Salem, a vibrant destination filled with historical and cultural attractions alike. To kick things off, head toward the Peabody Essex Museum (established in 1799), where you can take in more than 1.3 million pieces of art and a rotating lineup of exhibitions like Nature’s Nation: American Art and Environment.
When you’ve had your fill of the museum, it’s time to fill your stomach with lunch. Walk just a few blocks south toward Pickering Wharf and you’ll find a wide range of lunch options for refueling — lobster roll, anyone? If you’ve got time after lunch, enjoy a stroll along the marina before making your way back to the station to catch your next train shortly after 2 p.m.
Next, you’re heading to Newburyport. Give yourself enough time to grab the outbound 1155 Newburyport train at around 2:01 p.m. (not a Rockport train), and ride north six stops to the Newburyport Station stop.
Depart the train in Newburyport and walk a few blocks north to MetroRock Newburyport, where it’s time to work off lunch in style. Whether you’re an experienced climber of a first-timer, you can enjoy trying your hand at scaling one of the many rock walls — just remember not to look down once you reach the top.
All climbed out? Then you deserve a break. Head next door to visit RiverWalk Brewing, a local institution where you can enjoy a tour of the brewery and visit the taproom for small bites, fresh pours and more. When you’re feeling refreshed, head back to the platform and prepare to head home.
Arrive 10 minutes early to grab the inbound 1158 North Station train at around 5:52 p.m. and make your way back to Boston.
